Brain power consists of memory, reasoning, and your ability to comprehend and solve problems quickly and accurately. If you think you can’t get smarter or increase your brain power, think again—the mind can be exercised and improved just like the body can.

There are many courses and books available that are designed to help you improve your brain power. But don’t reach for your prepaid credit card just yet! You can increase your brain power in a number of easy and free ways:

• Work on your vocabulary. Learning new words is a great way to improve your brain power. Try to learn a word a week, and use it at least once a day. There are many “Word of the Day” websites that provide words and definitions for this purpose.

• Pay close attention. This will not only make you a better listener, but will also improve your memory. Make it a point to concentrate on details of anything you come in contact with.

• Play mind games. Not all mind games are a bad thing; crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and other games that challenge you mentally are a great way to improve your brain power.

• Use your non-dominant hand. Studies have shown that ambidextrous people have more nerve fibers connecting the two halves of the brain. Do easy things like brushing your teeth, using your computer mouse, or shooting a basketball with your non-dominant for a while, and watch your brain power grow.

• Practice relaxation. Tension and stress affects your memory and ability to think clearly. Meditation, yoga, or other relaxation techniques can help you stay calm in even the most stressful situations.

• Spend time with intelligent people. Taking time to talk with people who are smart, creative, and positive can increase your general brain power. You will most likely learn new things every time you speak with them.

What if you found out that you were worth billions of dollars? Then you found out that you were only able to use a couple hundred thousand dollars of it. The idea that there is all that money sitting there at your disposal but yet you are only allowed to use a small portion of it would be a rather disappointing thought. This is what happens when you start thinking about the human mind. Humans have the extraordinary ability to reason because of their amazing brain but are only allowed to use less than 10 percent of it.

What you will find with a little research is that there are millions of products out there that claim to be able to help you improve the power of your brain. Some even claim they can help you use most, if not all, of your brain. This is as laughable as any online scam. There are books for achieving mega memory capacity or to teach you how to do math at an alarmingly fast rate. But these have nothing to do at all with your brainpower, just how you can maximize the efficiency of your brain. It’s not about getting more fuel in the tank its about burning that fuel more efficiently.

Anyone who knows how to double the amount of brainpower they use would never be on books or on TV trying to get you to buy a product. They would be doing far more extraordinary things with their time, like helping people find great New York condos for sale, since that is difficult. It’s an interesting concept, however, to think that you have so much power in your brain with no idea how to use it. But it’s just an idea; not a concrete fact. Don’t believe people when they tell you it’s more.

You can improve biceps, triceps and other parts of your hand by repeating certain movements with a heavy weight in your grip. In the same way, you should focus on all those mental activities that compel your brain, metaphorically speaking, work under heavy load and stress.

It is important to focus on all your senses when you are trying to improve your brain power. Focusing on a complicated piece of text with loud music in the background will obviously improve your brain power. This is because you will bring your senses under control and will train your brain to ignore the noise and focus on words alone.

In the same way, focusing on your sense of smell and ignoring your vision or speech will help you bring your brain under control as well. Of course, it is easier to modify your physical body as compared to bringing your mind under control. The mind will constantly repel your attempts and will constantly send messages that you are demanding the impossible.

You will have to be very patient and will have to persevere for a very long time to enjoy benefits in the form of increase in brain power. The capacity of the brain is so high that even the smallest increase will drastically improve the overall quality of your life. It does not matter whether you are a student or a salaried employee. Improved brain power benefits all.

Just make sure you have a clear plan when opting for brain power exercises. The final goal should not be comfortably vague. Rather, you should set specific parameters. Of course, parameters alone will not decide whether any improvement has taken place or not. Yet, these are useful and unavoidable benchmarks that make it easier to analyze progress and carry out the necessary remedial activities.

What exactly is “Brain Power?” Unfortunately, it does not refer to any real quantity or quality of human intellect. Rather, it is a phrase that is used to indicate how smart one is, or how well they can remember things. It is a general term that encompasses wit, reasoning, memory, and the quickness and speed that we think of an answer to a question. But does it encompass ingenuity, creativity, and invention as well? Did it take exceptional minds to think of ideas like the personal computer or penicillin? Or even just nifty inventions like an electronic safer cigarette?

In terms of raw numbers, the human brain’s performance is measured in PetaFlops, or ‘thousand trillion floating point operations per second.’ That is truly amazing when quantified like that, considering the fastest super computer’s speed in the entire world as of May 2010, the Cray Jaguar, is 1.75 PetaFlops. But you might ask if the human brain is capable of going as fast as or faster than the fastest supercomputer known to man, why do we pause when doing basic math? Well, it’s because human brain power unfortunately isn’t very well suited to dedicate itself to singular tasks. Humans are constantly taking in so much information through their senses and dealing with so many different inputs at once that, as a machine, the mind is extraordinary in how much data it can store, and how many different things it can deal with at the same time and perform useful work.

Not only that, can a super computer try new things for invention, or just try something somewhat-random for the sake of creativity? Perhaps with future advances in technology and several orders of magnitude in complexity, the greatest supercomputers in the world will catch up to human brain power.

Relying on memory as the benchmark to determine the improvement of your brain power is a double edged sword. On one hand, improvement in memory is the simplest and most obvious method of determining your progress.

If you discover that you
-do not have to write things down to retain them in your mind
it is obvious that your brain power has increased. However, to merely cram and force your brain to remember stuff and to ignore all other aspects of brain health does not make sense either.

Logical deduction is an integral part of your thought process. Logical deduction is something that is achieved by practice and constant attempts to move beyond the obvious. On the other hand, cramming material into your brain and retaining it for a very long time runs completely contrary to logic and deductive reasoning. The latter is based on repeated efforts where the former is based on a qualitative improvement in your thinking capacity.

To focus on memory alone is obviously going to lead to problems. To completely ignore memory will leave you with very little practical benefits. The end result is that you will see disheartened at the absolute zero improvement in quality of your life.

As a student, you may feel the urge to focus on memory more than other aspects. Memory will help you get better grades and will help you qualify for better schools. Yet, at the end of the day, only an intelligent person with sharp logical reasoning and deductive skills will succeed. Hence, always adopt for a balanced approach.

Give sufficient importance to memory but don’t make it the sole parameter. That would be as foolhardy and would be no different than determining your body’s physical fitness on basis of size or strength of your biceps alone.

Avoid entering into a controversy over the actual method of improving brain power. Just as minds of two individuals are never the same, exercises and techniques that will help the individuals improve their brain power will never be identical as well. Of course, certain exercises may, in general, offer benefits. However, never conclude that a specific exercise should work for you just because it has worked for somebody else.

The brain is a very difficult organ to control. When you do not enjoy results, you will have to check whether it is due to your brain’s refusal to stretch beyond comfort level or whether the technique is just not working for you. It will take a lot of practice and perseverance before you can arrive at such a conclusion.

This is where contacting others who have undertaken these similar exercises will be helpful. You can identify the right cause very early. Are you lazy or are you facing trouble with a specific exercise- that is the moot question. The answer will help you find out when you ought to call it quits and opt for a better solution.

Contacting such persons was a difficult task before the internet became popular. Today, you can make use of forums and blogs and keep track of various solutions and techniques and progress stories without even stepping out of your house. Of course, free flow of information has also increased extent of misinformation. However, you can spend some time and easily identify all possible avenues of knowledge and information about improving your brain power.

This combined with disciplined and committed approach will definitely show results. You can also get feedback from experts on a regular basis. Bulk of the information is available for free and you can also pay experts to analyze your approach and point out flaws and mistakes.

Having a machine that is working at top efficiency does not mean you can operate it for 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. No machine on this planet has been designed to withstand such a workload. It is obvious that you will have to give adequate rest and breaks to enable the machine to recover its performance. The same is true in case of your brain as well.

Rest is very important for mental agility. Just as you cannot hold a small weight in your hands for an indefinite period of time, you cannot keep your brain under stress for very long period of time without any rest.

The simplest and most beneficial form of rest is sleep. The number of hours you sleep is not as important as the level of rest your brain enjoys after you have slept. There are numerous instances where our sleep is filled with dreams and disturbing thoughts and we end up feeling as if we have not slept at all. Do not expect your brain to kick into top gear immediately. On the other hand, there have been instances where just a few hours of sleep is sufficient to get back to maximum efficiency without any delay.

To bring this under your control is not easy. Until then, you should learn to recognize the symptoms and set your actions accordingly.

Sleep is not the only form of rest. You will also have to de-stress your brain on a regular basis. That is the reason why you should have a hobby or do something that caters to your senses.

Watching a good movie, appreciating a painting, listening to songs – these activities help you distract your mind from mental worries. You should strike the right balance between work, rest and relaxation to enhance your brain power.

Do I need brainpower exercises? My work does not offer any potential for progress. I am happy with my grades. I am housewife and see no reason to improve my brain power. The truth is that you will always stand to benefit by improving a brain power and your mental strength.

You will find it easier to carry out your regular chores. You will discover that you have more time in your hands. You will find that you grasp topics faster and with less effort. All this will obviously improve your overall capacity and efficiency. How you choose to exploit it is your lookout.

As you discover that you are getting better and better at work, there is a possibility of additional avenues opening up. You may find that you have the time to start working at home after completing all your household chores. You may discover that you are in a position to retain your grades even as you take time out for learning a hobby or playing a sport.

Our capacity to progress is unlimited. It is only fettered by our self imposed restrictions. As your brain power increases, you may find that you have hidden skills and may find the motivation to exploit them and improve upon them.

Hence, do not conclude that you do not need brain power exercises or that brain health is not important for you. Rather, give it a try and try to improve yourself contentiously. If it does not work, you can always go back to your original lifestyle.

However, chances are high that you will be enamored by the concept and you would be so addicted to your improved mental efficiency that you will never go back to the same old boring lifestyle. Many persons lack the enthusiasm to proceed. Some are afraid that they would not succeed. Some feel that they are already good enough. Make sure you avoid all these excuses and give yourself an honest chance.

How far should you rely on artificial substances and stimulants to improve your brain power? Going in for drugs and other substances to give yourself a high may seem like an attractive option. History has been replete with instances where artists, musicians, painters and even sports persons have done unthinkable achievements when they were either drunk or were using narcotics substances. However, does this mean you should also adopt the same approach?

Remember that using artificial substances to stimulate your mind is similar to shooting yourself in the foot. Sooner or later, you will find that you come to a dragging halt. One of the biggest disadvantages of using such substances to boost your brain power is the long term health damage. The cell damage that takes place because of these substances is irreversible. The short term benefits are very few while the long term disadvantages are numerous.

In such a scenario, there is no point in using such artificial substances at all. Further, you will find that your increased brain power comes at a very high price. You will become a psychological wreck. You will lose your desire to interact with society. You will lose your soft skills.

You will have a displeasing personality despite having a sharp brain and mental strength. Once you become an addict, all the gains that you have made will be lost. Hence, no matter how attractively it is portrayed; always keep in mind that addictive substances and narcotics are always going to cause harm.

Alcohol is often considered as a good stimulant. To enjoy a glass of wine on a regular basis and to enjoy the resulting stimulation is one thing. However, to consume wine just because you want to improve your brain power is a completely different thing. If you have the habit of enjoying a glass of wine, it may act as a soothing stimulant and may help you improve your mental strength.
