How to Become an Interior Designer

If you’re interested in the design and uniqueness of rooms in the home and frequently design your own dream home in your head, interior design may be for you. Interior designers plan and create unique layouts and arrangements of rooms in the home.

Skills

With interior design, it isn’t only about making a room pretty, but you have to be able to understand space, appropriate materials, read blueprints, and communicate well with architects and clients. Having this type of understanding can help you create a more spacious, comfortable, and safe setting, and being able to communicate well with your colleagues will make your job easier.

Training

You will need to complete a bachelor’s degree in interior design, which usually takes four years. When searching for a college, make sure that it offers your degree and is accredited. If there aren’t any colleges in your area that offer interior design classes, you may want to get an online degree. While in school, you will want to take plenty of computer courses because you will be using the computer a lot in your job.

Further Information

In your junior or senior year of college, start looking for intern opportunities. This will give you experience and training and may help you get a job once you graduate. You will also have to check with your state on licensing requirements, as they can vary from state to state. Even if a license isn’t required, you may want to acquire one anyway, as some employers like to see this.
